Helpful Information about COVID-19 updates, policies, and options
The safety of everyone who walks through our door is the highest priority for Hoag. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and consistent with recent California Public Health Orders, Hoag has adopted a policy that all employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption has been granted.
Born in 1596, French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher René Descartes coined the phrase “Cogito, ergo sum” – I think, therefore I am. Despite his groundbreaking work in geometry and physics, Descartes is most known for proving, without a doubt, that the act of thinking is proof we exist. He was clearly onto something big. Look at any portrait taken of the guy, and you’ll see a hint of a smirk on his lips.
But what happens when we don’t spend much time thinking about who we are? With so many other things fighting for our attention every day, taking the time for some self-reflection is probably low on the list. And considering 47% of us are not even paying attention to what we’re doing right now, it’s easy to see how a major existential crisis may be looming just around the corner if we don’t do a little introspection from time-to-time.
In this week’s issue you’ll find an article that breaks down what self-awareness is, and the science-backed benefits of a self-reflection practice. A video about how mindfulness can change the emotional life and health of our brains. A podcast about how to be your own best friend, and why you can’t cheat your way to happiness. And finally, an app recommendation for an AI-driven, intelligent journal.

Is self-awareness the same as self-reflection and introspection? What are the benefits of either? Well, one is a state-of-being, while the others are a daily practice and an exercise. Applied Positive Psychologist and author, Kelly Miller, takes us on a deep-dive into the world of self-awareness, including the science behind its many benefits.
Our brains are incredibly malleable. Forces outside of us are constantly reshaping the neural pathways in our minds. Which is why some of us are more susceptible to outside influence and personal bias, than others. Richard J. Davidson, professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin, outlines strategies to boost awareness, connection, insight, and purpose.
Christina Canters, international speaker, coach and host of The C Method podcast, sits with The Self Club CEO (Consciousness Expansion Officer), Samantha Sacchi to discuss what self awareness is, why we can’t rationalize our way to success and happiness, and why it’s so important to be your own best friend.
Reflectly is the world’s first intelligent journal. Using artificial intelligence, Reflectly helps you structure and reflect upon your daily thoughts and problems all from the palm of your hand. Consider it your personal AI-driven selfcare companion. Available for iOS and Android.
Quote of the Day
“There are three methods to gaining wisdom. The first is reflection, which is the highest. The second is limitation, which is the easiest. The third is experience, which is the bitterest.” – Confucius #QOTD
